GODSPELL
GOD SAVE THE PEOPLE.
On the surface, GODSPELL seems like a strange show to put on. Jesus tellings us a series of parables ahead of his crucifixion intercut with some jazzy show tunes is a bizarre premise that sounds like an overproduced Sunday School lesson. But cut deeper, and what you find is a show about community and resilience, in the face of a world outside that aims to keep people down. Jesus, our leader for the evening, speaks out against corrupt politicians, intolerance, and an unjust world. In a time where we desperately need to hold our leaders to account, and look out for each other, GODSPELL has never felt more relevant. The immediacy of these ideas, and the questions the show poses, made us decide to set the show in the here and now. GODSPELL should be a party, and that’s what we’ve made it. An invitiation to celebrate at Jesus’ flat, to ask questions and discover answers together. That is the magic of a leader like Jesus; that despite everything going on in our own lives outside, you can still put on some music and celebrate what you have with your friends. GODSPELL is a clash of philosophies, of ideas, of how best to live. Are you an idealist, a philosopher, a realist? How can we know who is right?
Our production is unmistakenly set right now, and we are thrilled to invite you in with us. If we didn’t have to make up ticket sales, perhaps you’d find this production in a cramped tenement flat. Instead, we invite you to join us in this exploration and celebration of people, with the knowledge that you are just a part of this community as our cast is.
How can we find happiness and love in our lives, when things seem just to keep getting worse? The answer is in the communities that we form. We find strength through each other. Through kindness, thankfulness, and forgiveness. Only together can we build a beautiful city.
